I was on my way to work and finding the traffic pretty typical, occasional deer a few elk.  I wasn’t really paying attention to the horse and rider, and then I thought that wasn’t exactly an every day event.  this horse and rider were navigating the busy streets through a construction zone at 7:00 AM.

HORSE AND RIDER MERGING TO ONE LANE IN TRAFFIC

I’ve been in Omaha, Dallas, LA, San Diego……. etc. during construction and traffic jams.  Just wanted you all to know that we have to deal with that ourselves right here in Estes Park, Colorado.  The horse and rider are preparing to merge into one lane.  We all know how difficult this can be at 7:00 AM on the way to work.

We not only have to deal with traffic issues here, but we also have other issues.

Duck Race flags appear above the horse and rider

DUCK RACE FLAGS FLYING ON MAIN STREET ESTES PARK

You can see the Duck Race flags flying on main street.  Every year the Rotary Club in Estes Park has their annual Duck Race.  You can purchase a duck and go cheer him on as he swims down the river.  The race ends up at the Wheel Bar.  Most people just start saluting their duck from the bar early in the race and watch at the finish line to see how their duck actually swims.  By the time the ducks get there everyone is in a great mood (I’m Irish and you know most Irishmen do their thinkn and plannen at the pub) and they don’t really care what place their duck came in.  We do raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities with the race.

Enjoy your drive to work – I do!

It’s a little hard to buy anything in the Hallmark store today.  If you look at the pictures there isn’t much on the shelves today, and by tomorrow I think we’ll be looking at a bare store.  Everyone seems to think that this would be a great time to take a vacation.

No merchandise on the Peaks Hallmark shelves

AND THE CUPBOARD WAS BARE

You can’t go on vacation when you are responsible for cataloging and doing inventory on the entire store.  Dealing with the decisions of what is going to be destroyed (about everything) and finding storage for fixtures and other items that will be re-used.

Nothing on the shelves at Hallmark in Estes Park

NEED A BIRTHDAY CARD?

Carpet has to be selected, (something in stock) installer found fixtures out of the way and carpet installed.  Then of course, there are those card lines that have been discontinued.  You can’t have 20 feet of empty space in your store, so now it’s finding a replacement line.

There is no opportunity to purchase any gifts today.

Selecting new product, ordering and coordinating the shipping.  Oh, that’s out of stock.  Can’t ship for eight weeks?  It all sounds wonderful that vacation.

LOOKING FOR A GREAT DEAL?

You have to order equipment, merchandise and coordinate restocking all of the merchandise back on the shelves.  Yes, it has to look beautiful when you are done.  So, you are working about twice as many hours during the day as you normally do.  Stress levels are high, and you worry about your customers.  Vacation might be a wonderful thing but it isn’t happening.

The Hallmark lady is still smiling, but she is working really hard for her customers putting her store back together in just the right way.

I guess you can only put so many pictures on at a time, so here we go with some more shots.

The air purification filters are now sitting where shelves, fixtures and products used to be.

Suzie will tell you that you can’t sell anything from an empty wagon.  I think that is why she probably has more inventory per square foot than any store I’ve ever been in.

BARE SHELVES AT PEAKS HALLMARK

Just thought I’d keep you abreast of what was happening at the Hallmark store since the drive through.  I looks like they are going to take everything completely out of the store, put in new carpet, and then put the fixtures back and new merchandise.

You can't sell from an empty wagon.

We would like to say thank you to everyone that is working in their hazmat suits to clean up the store.

Hallmark Drive Through

It was a pretty exciting day at the Hallmark story (managed, operated and owned by my beautiful bride) when one of the customers that came to buy a card had a drive through.  The good news is that no one was injured.

You never know when you go to work what kind of day you are going to have when you go to work.  One of the Hallmark customers was coming to purchase a card.  You never know when you are going shopping what kind of day you are going to have.  While parking in front of the store she suddenly found herself inside the store.  The good news is that no one was injured.

SANDHILL CRANES

It used to irritate me when we lived on the acreage South of Kearney when the Sandhill Cranes would arrive and keep me awake all hours of the night.  I’m guessing kind of like the people who live on the golf course in Estes Park, and the elk keep them awake all hours of the night bugling.

You don’t really appreciate what you have sometimes until it’s gone.  We don’t have Sandhill Cranes or trains in Estes Park.  Growing up on the railroad, I kind of got used to hearing those trains.  Here are some pictures that I took on my recent trip to Nebraska that I thought you might enjoy them.

Big Horn Sheep

After traveling through my “Flash Blizzard”, once the roads cleared up I ran into a traffic jam.  This particular traffic jam was not weather related, but typical of the types of traffic hazards that we have to deal with around Estes Park.

After a while, the sheep will decide that it is O.K. for the traffic to use the road again.
